Hi there,

I'm Austin, the GM at Inside.com. I wanted to share a bit more about what we've been up to and what we're planning for 2017.

About a year ago, we decided to wind down our news apps and instead focus on delivering the news via email. Our goal with the email newsletters we publish is to give you the most concise, direct, polished, comprehensive roundup of the news that we possibly can. Essentially, we want Inside to make you smarter and better at your job.

In the past twelve months, we've gone from one newsletter (the Inside Daily Brief, still our flagship) to 15 newsletters – now covering a wide range of topics like podcasting (our most recent launch!), artificial intelligence, Amazon, virtual/augmented reality, San Francisco, and even Donald Trump.

Here's the full roster of our active newsletters:

Across the board, our emails are averaging open rates above 40% – which is well above industry standards. Our weekly active subscriber number has climbed quite a bit along the way too:
Another key metric that we pay close attention to is "opens per month" – this is the easiest way to measure overall engagement. Without divulging specific numbers, here's our "opens per month" chart:
And we have lots more launching soon. In fact if you visit Inside.com you can cast votes to decide which newsletters we launch next:
In addition to our daily workflow of culling and synthesizing the most important news, we're also taking the time to tackle special projects from time to time. Here are some recent examples: What do you think of these special editions? Do you want to see more like this? Hit reply and let us know!

To get all of this done, we grew from 3 people to 15 people last year. Here's the team that makes all of this happen:

Christine Linnell – Writer/editor
Josh Molina – Writer/editor
Robert Scoble – Resident VR & AR expert
Will Tjernlund – Resident Amazon expert
David Strom – Writer, Inside Security
Beth Spotswood – Writer, Inside San Francisco
Yancy Berns – Writer/editor
Stephen Henderson – Writer, Inside Venture Capital
Krystle Vermes – Writer/editor
Rob May – Writer, Technically Sentient
Jonha Richman – Growth marketing associate
Bennet Logan – Writer/editor
Lon Harris – Editor in chief
Austin Smith – General Manager
Jason Calacanis – CEO

And, we're hiring. We're looking for a Rails developer, and we're always looking for talented writers.

Looking to 2017, our focus will be on expanding to new verticals, building our audiences, and continually improving our editorial – again, always striving to make you smarter and better at your job. If you want to help, here's what you can do:
  1. Forward this email to 5 friends and CC team@inside.com
  2. Reply to our emails to let us know how we can do a better job
  3. Vote on Inside.com to help us decide which newsletters to launch next.
We're looking forward to making major progress in 2017, and we are happy to have you along for the ride. As always, we love to hear from you, so hit reply to this email or any other one we send, and let us know what you think.

Austin Smith
