BUSINESS

  • Another round of declines on Thursday has put the Dow Jones industrial average and the S&P 500 into correction territory, defined as a pullback of at least 10% from their high. It's the first time since early 2016 that the stock indexes have experienced such a correction and has been driven largely by increasing anxieties over inflation. • Facebook has confirmed that it is testing a downvote button to flag comments that could be inappropriate, uncivil, or misleading. The button is currently being tried out on a limited number of public Page post comments and aligns with Facebook's new stated goal of more meaningful interaction (by hiding bad content), but also raises questions about censorship. POLITICS

  • In an unexpected turn of events, the federal government underwent a brief shutdown beginning last night after midnight — the second of this year under the Republican-controlled Congress and President Donald Trump. A bipartisan stopgap funding and budget package was introduced earlier this week but was met with last-minute resistance by Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul, who objected to the bill's contributions to the ballooning deficit. Paul proceeded to engage in a nine-hour, on-again, off-again protest and floor speech that Congressional leaders couldn't halt, meaning the midnight deadline would not be met.

This morning Congress voted to end the brief shutdown, passing the bill along to Trump who is expected to sign it and avert any serious interruption of the government's business. Reuters

  • [Basketball] The NBA trade deadline has come and gone and no team underwent as extreme a makeover as the Cleveland Cavaliers, who traded nearly half of their team. Six Cavs players and a first-round pick went to four teams in three separate deals in exchange for four new players: SB Nation

CULTURE

  • 157 new emoji have been finalized to be added this year, as soon as in June. From redheads to cupcakes and Petri dishes to toilet paper, this year's set will surely help elevate our cultural language to an even higher form. The Verge

  • Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to play the Joker for an upcoming untitled origin movie for the clownish criminal. But what about Jared Leto's Joker, all three of you who saw Suicide Squad ask... well he's apparently still part of the DC universe. This title would apparently fall under a yet-to-be-announced new banner of DC Comics. Variety
